Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
