RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
