The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, lying 36 points Norris, finished in P17 as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at the fourth corner early in the session. The Japanese lost control over the curbs on exit before sliding over the escape zone, and was blessed to get away with just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho corner before the final corner on to the main straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th place, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber P3, over half a second slower than the Australian's time. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
