Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
